Changes

Last year, I got engaged to my six-year long boyfriend, Michael, a Phd Physics student, and just this May, we tied the knot at Mt. Carmel Parish church witnessed by our family and friends. It was a happy event, of course. It took a lot of our energy just to get through the wedding. What’s with a lot of hand-made articles we tried to include into that occasion.

Felted Baby Slippers with textured Sole

Some crocheters experience a stage in their crocheting life wherein they see something cute and they want to make a crochet version of it. Even though the crochet version would just be that. ‘cute’ but may be utterly useless or if not, impractical to use.

This is what my fiancee pointed to me this morning when I was trying to assemble pieces of what should be ‘baby slippers’. I had this idea while playing with his niece yesterday. See, I made moccasins for this little girl that was meant to be for Christmas of last year, but were not able to deliver the presents. It has just been two months since, and the shoes do not fit already. My, my.. babies grow fast. One of her slippers were lying around and I picked it up just to compare the size, it’s like comparing a grape seed to the fruit itself :) hahaha…

And so, while sitting on the floor with baby already asleep on the bed, I started crocheting. For some reason, when I just don’t have anything else to do or I don’t want to do anything else (In this case, it’s the latter) I crochet. :D

I remembered my friend, peach reminding me to start writing the stitches as I go on with crocheting so I could share the pattern later on, (If someone happens to like what I was able to do) And so I got a pen and a notebook and started crocheting (and writing) :) .

I was a bit afraid to post this one coz I got this feeling that it would be on the What Not to Crochet Blog :) .. Hehe. If you make slippers like this, there’s just two possible outcome. Either these  slippers would be worn out as soon as your baby stepped out of the house. (well you could let your baby just stay indoors to save the slippers from getting ruined) Then your baby might slipped, because the footwear was basically made of soft material and there’s little friction between tiled floors and cotton yarn.
Anyway. Much with the introduction. Here’s my first baby slippers, The design made it look like an outdoor-kind-of footwear.

The sole and strings are made with Brown cotton yarn (bedspread weight) and the top is made of 90% wool, handfelted. I plan to give the pattern away for people who would buy the wool yarn from my shop. So hopefully, someone would be interested.

Here is the top view of the slippers. It has draw strings to wrap around the ankle for more security. :)

A closer view. Has the top sole been felted properly? Hopefully.

I try to always make a textured sole for slippers and shoes i make, to hopefully add a little more friction to the floor and the footwear. Hopefully later i could find a way to add rubbery texture on the soles so it would be more practical for the wearer.

Side note on felting. The procedure went much easier with colored wool. The garment felted immediately with just few scrubbing and agitation. It made me happy this morning you know? Progressing a little bit with felting. :)

Crocheted Flowers

Crocheted Flowers

I am a crochet addict, and recently i have infected my mother. She keeps wanting more and more crochet projects. She recently fulfilled my wish to have something ginantsilyo crocheted in my photoshoot when she made me these wonderful crocheted flowers.

Even momoink and yaki liked the flowers, look how they look so in love with each other.

Working in Parallel

Last Sunday, I accompanied Mike in his laboratory. He needs to work on something and that day was the only day he could work without the hassle of someone else waiting for him to finish so others could use some of the equipment he needs.

Mike working

That’s mike on the background. His pc on the left, his microscope he assembled on the furthest left, the detector (gray and blue on the right) Some lens tissue on the center atop some miscellaneous boxes, His working table is surely a mess.

And I was supposed to finish a crocheted bolero so I brought some yarns and the unfinished project. As a precautionary measure, I always bring extra yarns with me, on the fear that I might be bored on the recent one I am working on.

And yes I did. so I decided to start the shrug that was ordered to me It was supposed to be made in wool (Yeah, i want to start crocheting wool). I did not know the exact size but I assumed it has to be longer than me. It always has to be.

The wool yarn I was using was the bluish gray (100g) from the store. I removed the ‘plastic cone’ from this yarn so I could measure the weight. Thus it was difficult to work with.

But, i was in mike’s lab and there has to be something in there that could help me. I saw some metal rods (which i asked mike how much, $6 to %10 !!!) and a metal base mounted on the optical table (the working table mike was working on) hehe, voila. i had a threader!

A closer look…

And testing if the threader works..

Yei! I am ready to work again.

Thus with my magnificent instrumentation i was able to crochet comfortably. But alas, we had to spend more time in the lab because mike was unable to align his needed laser properly. And i was really cold. So my fingers are already shivering from the cold and i can’t insert the hook from the right hole so I stopped working and asked mike to take a picture of me with the crocheted article I had worked.

Here it is…

Me and my first woolen crocheted article

And before we went home (at 10pm) Mike was able to make his experiment work, and thanks to what? Hahaha.. inspiration he had coz i was with him.. <3

Funny how some friends are also excited about the wool yarns

Just now, my red wool yarns are going to be out of stock already. sigh…

I am excited to try felting.

Wow. I never thought it will be possible for me to try felting. Now I have my wool yarns and I have been searching for google images of felted crochet projects.
The search results already make me want to go home and try em. But I am just afraid to try. I think felting is a irreversible process.
If done wrong, i have ruined the yarn and itss not cheap.
Sigh. here are some of the felted crochet i’ve seen on Google Search Result:

This felted flower can be applied as additional ensemble to many different projects. Like the felted bag below.

I want to try making crocheted accessories again! :D sigh…
