from the girl behind Nikita

Hi! This girl’s name is Nike. She is currently an architecture student in U.P. Diliman,  a craft-and-hobbies enthusiast, a part-time beader/crocheter, an occasional bead collector, and an aspiring jewelry designer. The name Nikita is a derivative of her name, also a monicker she acquired in high school. She got little cyber craft nook and online shop both in multiply and here at ginantsilyo.

She got hooked!

She started as a regular beader– working only with run-of-the-mill beads, charms and jewelry findings you usually find at local craft stores, especially the ones along Villalobos. Not long after she started beading did she also start becoming bored with the same and usual materials she uses, as well as with the creations she was able to come up with using them. Remembering how her mom made use of crocheted flower appliques as embellishments, she was inspired to incorporate crocheting into my craft. Soon enough she discovered crochet’s potential in jewelry-making. Since then, she has been using crocheted motifs and components together with my beads and charms to come up with exceptional pieces.

Her favorite materials include 100% cotton crochet thread, metallic yarns, vintage plastic flower beads, floral lace pieces, vintage charms and buttons, rhinestones and crystals, and printed vintage fabrics.

Aside from the craft, she also enjoy music, architecture, film, fashion, literature, travel, food, and yes…shopping!

The Crocheter

Lorelie Dazo - crocheter

I started crocheting when I was in grade II. My sisters all had their projects about crochet for their Home Economics class and I just can’t wait to try.

My mother was my first teacher. She taught me how to make a single chain.

It was fun and it was (I then thought) easy so I asked her to teach me more. And so I learned other basic stitches but I cannot make something pretty and usable… Almost all my first works were circular since I cannot make uniform stitches.

Our neighbor taught me how to make the granny square. It was then I thought that I could make my own patterns and motifs then attach them with another…

I also design accessories

I used to design  and sell accessories too.

My transition from beading to crocheting happened when I came across monaco crochet threads sold at our Cooperative store :) during my first (and last) semester at graduate school.

This hobby is quite handy. I do not need to bring much with me. Just a ball of yarn and a hook and I can do it anywhere.  That’s why i got hooked :D
