I made these crocheted beret and pig ears for my niece – Kalai

and the scarf is for the expecting mommy Peps, with a matching hat for her incoming princess:

This is a small version of the ribbed hexagonal beret (pattern available at the store) I just added a few more rows to allow insertion of an adjustable ribbon. Just in case this will not fit my niece’s head.

Comfort Shrug

This is my first shrug and my first long sleeved crocheted garment. It was quite comfy and i love wearing it when me and my barkada goes out. It just became a bit bigger to me when my friends started trying this on… My shoulders are really low and I’m quite small and since crocheted garments are meant to stretch when forced to it became a bit loose Still it fits so right on my arms that i do not care much if it falls off my shoulder now

Ah, this shrug has been almost two years old and the color hasn’t faded yet. Even if it experienced multiple machine washings. No fall out stitches whatsoever

Crocheting as I go

Sometimes when i crochet. I just crochet as I go. Meaning, I do not intend to do anything at all. I just want to crochet.

For the past weeks, I just want to come out with a desirable pattern. So I try to combine a few stitches here and there. Pulling strings out again if I dislike the outcome or just cutting off the yarn and starting again.

Finally i decided to come up with a striped pattern. I have a cardigan that is striped s and i liked it. So i have to improvise another. I came up with this:

Its a combination of chain, treble and single stitches. The good thing about combining treble and single crochet (sc) in a solid stripe is that it provides a compact look but still maintains the stretchy characteristic of crocheted materials. It is the sc that holds the treble stitches in place. The chain stitches are there to provide the desired ‘crochet-lace’ effect. I expect this crocheted garment to have so many holes.

I stitched 200 chains as a foundation. It covers the entire length of my arm. I was meaning to crochet another long-sleeved cardigan. But when I had crocheted up to the fourth stripe, i reconsidered. The vertical stripes make me look thinner. and mike said that the pattern does not look good on a sleeve.

I shifted the crocheted piece 90 degrees and tried to wrap it around my body The ends did not meet. So if it’s not gonna be a long-sleeved cardigan, it should be a bolero. And with the body already completed, i went crocheting what should be the ‘sleeves’ of the bolero.

After finishing one side, i thought that i’d rather have this as a blouse. So after finishing the sleeves, i connected the two ends. And crocheted more rows on the other side of the garment. It ended up like this. And there’s a missing wide space up front. Deciding to make the neckline loose I patched the space with two right triangles.

It should look okay right? As having wide neckline meant to emphasize the chest area. And theoretically it looks good on most girls wearing a tube underneath. With hopes high, i continued crocheting until the garment covered the entire length of my torso. I fitted it. And it did not look okay. Well.

What’s to emphasize when there’s nothing at all?

Hating it, I put the whole thing in my closet after pulling out the stitches on the neckline. This is the third project i was putting aside. And it’s not a good sign. Especially that I stopped crocheting for months. And when i decided to crochet again, nothing came out good.

Next morning, saturday. I had nothing to do and the wasted top’s still in my head. I decided to get it back and reconsider. If a wide neckline is not good for me, there’s no way to go but to close the space. I have so many buttons and mylein says i look good on buttoned shirts. and so i crocheted overlapping squares on the space. But because it was a morning filled with frustrations over wasted crochet and also with empty stomach, the squares overlap too much that i could tie them together.

Mylein saw it and said that it looks good enough. And maybe i could crochet the ends a bit longer to make the ribbon fall more naturally. And that’s what i did. It turned out okay and i liked it. I wore it the next day when Mike and I went out.

This pink crocheted top is made from two strands of monaco crochet thread.

Closer Look

This blouse used to be one of my favorites. I just have to wear it on top of a spaghetti strap and i’m off to go.

It’s actually the second blouse I was able to make during my first sem at graduate school . I used 2 balls of ecru, 1 ball of pink, 1 ball of dark pink and 1 ball of variegated monaco yarns

They are durable enough to withstand multiple washings (in washing machine, mind you.)

Things to do with a crocheted chain – Voodoo Doll Head

I’ve been squeezing my head for ideas on what you could do with crochet chains. Something easy and creative. And while I’m riding the MRT on my way home my mind drifted again. As it always does when i have nothing to do. I remember my favorite project – the witch doll which i learned during my elementary days. However the witch doll is a yarn craft not necesarilly something you crochet. Probably you could crochet the witch doll’s garment, but it’s not still the thing i have in my mind. As i discarded that idea, I remember my friend’s keychain a pink voodoo doll. Then it hit me.

You could actually create the voodoo doll’s head using crochet chains. You just have to wrap it around a ball, a wooden round bead or something. So here it is, the second series to the Things to do with a crocheted chain.

Materials Needed:

Yarn (of course) I prefer acrylic yarn, coz of their fibrous finish.
Hook (size depends on thickness of yarn)
A wooden round bead.
Scissors
Bostix Sew no more Glue
Wires with round/loop end
cardboard

Instructions:

THE HEAD:

Applying glue to put the yarn in place and adding stitches as necessary

Attach the wire in the covered ball

1. Make a crochet chain as long as necessary.

2. Using the glue, attach the crocheted chain to the bead then carefully wrap the bead with the crocheted yarn while applying glue subtly.

3.When you have a good roun ball (covered with crocheted yarn) Attach a wire into the ball. Find the place where there is a ‘hole’ in the bead and insert the wire in that place.

Then gently fold the other end of the wire as shown in the figure to the right.

4. Next is attach another wire to the other side. This is where we will attach the body of the doll.

THE BODY:

1. The body of the doll is just made of yarn. Cut a piece of cardboard and make sure that the cut cardboard will look smaller than the head. voodoo doll’s body are usually a lot smaller than the head.

2. Wind yarn in the cardboard as thick as you want the doll’s body to be.

3. Tie the other side of the wounded yarn with a string. Then remove the cardboard while keeping hold of the free end.

4. About an inch from the tied end, tie another string around the yarn, to divide it into two parts. The longer part shall be the the legs and body and the upper part will be the arms.

5. Untie the upper part of the yarn. then seperate the body into arms and legs.

6. Wind another yarn around arms and legs. Put glue to keep yarns in place.

7. Attach the head into the body by pushing the wire inside the body and keep it in place. Cover the wire by winding more yarn around the body.

Your doll should now look like this:

Creating the Eyes

Using a different colored yarn, create a knot two times. Then glue the knot into the face. Make two for the eyes.

You now have voodoo dolls

Things to do with a crocheted chain: Improvised Headband

Improvised Headband

Materials needed:

Variegated Pink Wool and Pink Cotton Yarn

Materials for the headband

YARNS (of course!) – I used a variegated pink wool (bulky) and soft cotton
Plain black headband
A hook (4.5 mm)
Adhesive tape (Double sided) – Glue STick is much better, mind you.
some leaves to accentuate
button for the flower applique
needle

Using the variegated wool yarn crochet chain to cover the entire length of the head band.

Cover the headband with the crocheted chain. Put it in place using an adhesive tape. It is much better to glue it with a glue stick, but my glue gun’s at home back in the province so i have to improvise.

Create a 5 Flower applique using the solid pink cotton yarn.

- Chain 3 slip stitch to form a ring. *Chain 4, slip stitch into the ring * (Repeat 4 more times)

Attach a yellow button to the flower.

Attach five leaves at one side of the headband.

Attach the flower applique by sewing it into the headband.

Now you have an improvised headband. Pretty easy right?

Butterfly in Venetian Crochet

Introduction:

I got this pattern from A. W. B. Crochet Book, I downloaded from Antique Pattern Library. The book is not easy to read. It requires basic knowledge of crochet sticthes and uses a lot of abbreviations. It took a while before I was able to comprehend one crochet instruction, and this is it.

I am specially attracted to butterfly motifs, pendants or appliques that’s why i chose to follow this particular pattern. The crochet instructions that follow is a direct excerpt from the book:

The applique is made from separate parts sewed together, something much akin to irish crochet. Of course since the book is an irish crochet book.

Instructions:

BODY -

Ch 8, miss 1, d into each of the next 6 st, 3 d into end st or topl work d along other side of ch and 3 d at other end also. Work all the way round again with d, working 3 d into the end st, and when you reach the top again, ch 9, fasten into the last d, forming a ring for the head. Over the ring, work 5d; * ch 20, fasten back into 10th st, sl st back to head; * 1 d over ring, repeat from * to *; 5 d over ring, 1 d into same top st on body; work d down to lower end. Ch 11 for second section of body, work d all around three times and a half, always working 3 d into each end, and fasten off at top of section, under upper section.

WINGS -

for the upper wings, work the picot braid the length needed. For the half og th eupper wings and for the lower wings, work pieces of plain braid. (For directions see post about braid)

To form the points in the lower wings, work 1d, 1 ch and 1d into the same st, and in the last row, work 1d picot and 1d into each point; between the points, miss 1 spaces and 2 or 3 st in the longer spaces, to obtain the in-curve.

RINGS -

14d over a ring of 8ch, and 18d over a ring of 10ch. Make four of the larger rings and two of the smaller.

After all the separate pieces are made, baste them face down on the pattern as shown. Sew securely together and put in a filling of twisted bars and Bruges knot.
