Hooray for today – thank you Yarn Source Manila

I received the yarns from Yarn Source Manila. :) She was very happy with the image she requested, and I was more than willing to do it! 😀

Hooray for today!

Hooray for mornings and things that make them good
Hooray for beaming smiles that make my day
Hooray for stops and gos
Hooray for colors and quick hellos
Hooray for surprises that walk my way
Hooray for friends I’ll make, oh hey…hey!
Hooray for treats that make me smile,
Like magic stripes that fill the sky
Hooray for days that make me say,
Oh Hooray for today!

I have influenced my mom to crochet again

I have influenced my mom to crochet again. And she has crocheted a lot ever since. Now she is helping me with my business.

She is also taking orders from my facebook page as well.

Here is her current product:

Mint Green Crocheted Skirt

I am more than amazed on her finished skirt. She has been indulging me since last Christmas that she’ll make something for me. And here it is. I really really like how the crocheted skirt turned out.

As soon as I published the skirt on facebook, we had an order for this design. And my mom started it right away, she can crochet so long as my little kiddo won’t play around the yarn.

The open lace work pattern we used for the skirt is very nice. I really like the stripes and the lace combined :)

Crochet to earn

One of the things people mostly asked me is how much can you earn from crafting?

I have been a crafter since I was a kid. My mom takes time to prepare me lunch and gives me around five pesos (if I am a bit luckier, she will give ten) as “baon” to school. That will be enough to buy me a cupcake and an orange juice in foil pack.

But since I want to do a lot of things and cannot afford them, I often sell the things I can do,like pencil drawings of famous cartoon characters in a sheet of bond paper, crocheted purse at P2.00 to P5.00 each, homemade polvoron and pastillas my mom cooked, pad papers transformed into notebooks. I know ever since  that crafting actually earns me money. And whenever I want something, I do not hesitate to think of a craft I could sell.

So how much have I earned from crafting? I am unable to count. The most memorable earnings I can remember was from creating beaded accessories which helped me afford half of the money I needed for a conference trip in Bohol during college. That is saying something. The only “accounting” I remembered doing was that for a thousand pesos worth of materials that could supply me accessories for a month, I can earn twice as much in a week.

Take my friend, Cherry, as an example. She has a facebook page that showcases her amigurumi projects.

Crochet Bags and Souvenirs

Crochet Bags and Souvenirs

She sells amigurumi as souvenirs.

Crocheting is very hard despite the popular belief that it is the most convenient needlework craft. When doing amigurumis, you have to be very, very, very, very patient.

I have no patience doing amigurumi.

Imagine doing this a hundred times more:

And with a number of different designs:

The best thing about Cherry is that she creates her own designs with no patterns to follow. She is humble enough to admit she can’t read and understand patterns and instructions, hence she improvises, with only Monaco cotton thread as her material and a single sized hook.

This year, like Cherry, my mind is full set to sell and earn. I am crocheting carefully as to make each stitches neat and uniform. And I am trying to create new designs as well. This time around, since I am no longer crocheting for myself, I am very patient with each project. Do not crochet when you are tired and do not continue when your hands hurt. Each misgivings I will feel for a project might contribute to the total effect of the finished product, so I will only do so when I am eager. And since I have a goal in mind, I know I will never run out of eagerness.

Selling would not limit me to what I can do, but would bring enough challenge for me to make more beautiful and neater crocheted items. I hope too that this would help me earn enough money to buy curtains for our new house :)

Yarns take up space.

Yarns take up space. In my case, it’s worth one whole room.

One messy room full of yarns

I recently made some sinful purchases despite the pledge to lessen them. My excuse? I am now going to sell and I need materials. Pardon me for being this eager beaver, but since I am focusing on bags, I just have to have these wonderful bag handles!

and so I told myself, I have to make sure I can sell something!

But before I can make something, I have to have the yarns to use. And I made a recent discovery. These yarns are awesome for bags. They are strong and durable. Though crocheting them is very painful for my hands, but I love them!!!!

Nature Cotton Yarn

I have two incoming bags made from these yarns and I haven’t used the bag handles I bought from www.aliexpress.com

I have to repeat my bag hack because I ran out of yarn.

And then this other bag, which I designed myself ( I do love the design, mind you) is almost done! but I cannot move a finger to finish this. I’m sick of doing dc’s!!! hehehe..

The handles and the base are made from the Nature Cotton Yarn:

Mercerized Cotton - (bought in Saudi Arabia)

But the body is made from wool, which makes the whole thing quite expensive.

Anyway, back to the room. I have to tidy this one more time, which will lead me to another purchase – a decent shelf.

I have a friend named Gina

I have a friend named Gina. We were working in the same company, three years back. I sometimes hang out with her group of friends during lunch and merienda, but we were never really close as we are now. Maybe because the time when I was new in the company, she was on a maternity leave. When she got back, there were never enough time to be really close, but according to her, I was able to influence her into crocheting. Hence, the story of friendship begun.

Me and gina now

This is one of the few good stories that crafting really brings people together. Most of the similarities, besides the passion for the craft comes from having “bigger than life” son, and a recently married life, which becomes our everyday topic as we share frustrations over missed stitch and lost hooks and delight over recently finished projects.

Gina loves crocheting. I think, more than crocheting itself, she likes the joy it brings to his son, who she adores so much that almost all her works are attributed to him. My most favorite one, a crocheted vest made from silk-cashmere blend.

Crochet Pullover for Thor

Look at the facce of her kid!

I also love the bag she made. It’s an owl! And yes, it is for this sweet little kiddo again!

Crochet owl bag

She also made a pair of socks, some toys and hats and scarves and so many more for this lucky child. I do wish I could make something for my baby too. But as selfish as I am, almost all my works are for me, and me and me. Besides, my son hates socks, hats, scarves and jackets. He only likes to wear very thin shirts.

Hehe, now back to Gina. I am telling this because we recently shared eagerness to earn something from crochet. As she was really very prudent in pricing her creations, I am encouraging her to take more value in what she can do, hence you might see some of her creations in my facebook page as well. :) Hopefully, our venture would be profitable :) Goodluck to us!!!

A promising new year

This year is very promising. I launched my new facebook page, in lieu of a message sent by my friend, Ms. Meikah, who bought earrings from me last year.

Happy Customer! Happy Seller!

Happy Customer! Happy Seller!

A friend of hers saw my earrings and are interested to sell these items abroad. Yipee!!!! Just good enough reason for me to launch my facebook page, which I did plan last year. I just told myself, I have to finish the bags I am crocheting before launching it, but due to this news, I have to! So that I could share the excitement and thrill and yes, so that I can showcase some products. :)

Hence another good news, a friend of my husband from Saudi Arabia placed an advanced order for this white little blouse,

White Crocheted Blouse

White Crocheted Blouse

This is very good news as I have a reason to write down the pattern as well.

Another big deal is that I am crocheting a new bag design I created myself:

Bag Handle

Bag Handle

The bag handle is my favorite part of the bag. It’s textured and very tightly crocheted that it hurts. My nanay(mother-in-law) liked it too. She likes a lot of expensive bags and she said that it looks “tutyal” or very high-end. I really like being praised (for my works) because it makes me want to finish the items I am doing despite the pain and numbness of my fingers and joints.

I hope you are having a very good new year too!

Yarn Source “outsourced”!

This week, I got contacted by the owner of “Yarn Source Manila“, an online seller of yarns of different kinds. Remember that before 2012 ends, she launched a photo contest worth a bagful of yarns? Well I did not win, but I was informed that she really liked my photo entry. Anyway, so she contacted me to ask if she can use my photo as a “sold out” photo. She uses this to indicate that an album containing items being sold are already “sold out”. Hence, a bad news breaker for a buyer like me. But! This is the good news, she asked me to revise it in exchange for a bagful of yarns!!!!!!!!! OH WOW! I’ll do it right away!!! 😀 hehe.. so i edited my earlier entry and came up with something like this:

sold out logo for yarn source manila

I got a reply from her telling me she really liked the image I made. This actually brightened my day (and the days ahead).

Yipee for Yarn Source Manila!

Btw, I did buy a few balls of yarns from the site and lo and behold! when I received my basic crochet cotton yarns (Just two big balls of same color)

I was really, really happy! This is the kind of yarn I have been looking and wanting. This is the same yarn I used for this crocheted blouse:

Soft to touch and thin, just the way I like it.

I just hope the next time the items i want to buy won’t be sold out. :) Happy crocheting everyone!

Ginantsilyo launches its Facebook Page

I decided that I will start selling crocheted items. To help me promote my products immediately and reach out to people, I created the facebook page: http://facebook.com/ginantsilyo.

Hopefully through this, I would be able to reach to a larger audience and gain more followers as well as prospective clients.

Who won the give yarns this christmas part two contest?

You might have not heard from me who won the “Give Yarns this Christmas, Part II” Contest, so I will update you guys. Let’s hear first what our dudettes made for christmas.

One entry came from a dear friend, Gina – who crocheted purses, bags and headbands for her friends. Lucky them!

She said that:

This year since I’m busy too much I decided to crochet gift items but sadly I cannot crochet as much as I want so my gift is limited to those who are near my area and to those who I see everyday.

Whoa… to the people who will receive these gifts, you are very lucky for having the opportunity to be in her Christmas list. Devoting your time to crafting and giving is not easy especially for a full-time employee/mother like Gina!

Here’s a peak to what she created:

My most favorite from the treats is the green mesh bag on the right side. :) My favorite color is green so I am actually biased. I requested her to take a closer pic of the bag though before she gave it away. Hopefully she would update me for a nicer photo.

The other entry came from Ms. Girlie, who won the contest and received loads of yarns from me, crocheted big stuffs, like boleros (long sleeved ones, mind you) , scarves and shawls. She said that:

I just crochet these from October to this day and here it is, I had to share. I know it’s cold where they are specially now as its winter season so I made some wearable long sleeves, shawl , scarf and hat to keep them warm, pouches and bag for their accessories.

I like the white version she made :

To these gals, thank you for joining and sharing your gifts! I salute you for actually taking the effort to handcraft your gifts.

Watch out for new contests next year! Have a happy and fantastic new year everyone!
